A facilitator's role is to help a peer discussion group achieve its objectives, make sure it has the resources it needs, and encourage and support the group members. The group has responsibility for the content of the discussion and the facilitator manages the process.

Facilitation skills and training

Facilitation is a skill, and the success of a peer discussion group will rest with a good facilitator. Training in facilitation for peer discussion is not essential, but it is highly recommended in order to develop confidence and skill in managing group discussions effectively.

If you do not have access to facilitator training provided by a LOC or employer, why not view DOCET’s online facilitation skills training available free on their website for fully qualified optometrists.
